By the time you get to your first exam, you will already have completed
several chapter reviews and should know how to use them. Exams are almost
identical to chapter reviews. However they have a lot more questions, are time limited and are limited in the
number of attempts you have. Also unlike reviews, each time you attempt an
exam, you will not necessarily get the same questions because exam questions
are chosen randomly from a huge pool of questions.

Figure 1 : The Exam Page
Looking at the “Exam Info” area, you can see that this exam
has a time limit of 60 minutes and has 60 randomly chosen questions in total
for you to answer. You can also see that you need a score of at least 80% to pass the exam.
The “Usage
Summary” area shows you that 1 attempt at the exam has already been made,
which lasted four seconds ! Obviously, this user (John
Smith) has started his first attempt and quickly ended the exam thereafter
without spending much time in the exam. This is NOT recommended considering he only had two attempts to begin with.
He now has 1
hour, 59 minutes and 56 seconds of time to spend on his one remaining attempt
at the exam, but, since the exam itself has a time limit of 60 minutes, he will
only get an hour to do the exam. He has
therefore wasted 59 minutes and 56 seconds of time and one attempt at the exam.
The “Last
Attempt” information tells you that the last time John attempted this exam,

Clicking on the “Go to Exam” start button in Figure 1, will bring up a full screen window with a warning
message as shown in Figure 2 below.

At this point you have not yet started the exam
and you can click on the “Close without
starting” button to return to the previous page without starting the exam.
Once you start the exam by clicking on the “Start
the Exam” button, you must complete it. Any attempt to
close the exam screen (window) or attempt to otherwise leave the exam, will be
interpreted as the user ending the exam and will therefore cause the exam to be graded and the resulting
score will be stored in the central SmartLearn system database.

Figure 3 : The Exam : Case
study and timer
Writing (performing) the exam itself is almost
identical to doing a chapter review. Some exams will have a case study which a user must refer to
in order to answer the questions correctly. To view the case study, click on
the “show case study” button on the
side of the screen. This button will appear if a case study exists for the exam
being attempted.

Figure 4 : End Exam |
Clicking on the “Finish the Exam” button will bring up a prompt (Figure 4). Clicking on “OK” will confirm your wish to end the exam, and the exam will end. Clicking on “Cancel” will return you back to the exam, where you left off.
Reviewing your exam results is much the same as
reviewing your chapter review quiz results (see:”Review Questions”).
